Our highly skilled and experienced lecturers will guide you through the fascinating world of diamonds. You will study the 4C’s: Carat, Colour, Clarity and Cut, determining the quality of a stone and as such the price. You will learn how to detect the most common simulants, and you will be able to work with the best microscope in the world and other gemmological equipment. At the same time, you will develop impeccable grading skills.


Our courses are a perfect balance between theoretical knowledge and practical skills.

Course Content

  • Introduction to the properties of diamonds.
  • Explanation of the 4C’s: Carat, Colour, Clarity and Cut.
  • Correct cleaning of diamonds.
  • Diamond optics. Use of HRD Antwerp stereozoom microscope (D- Scope).
  • Systematic examination of a diamond. Favourable and unfavourable angles of observation.
  • Principles of weighing, calculation of the carat weight.
  • Identification of external and internal characteristics. Plotting and exercises.
  • Colour determination of diamonds by comparison with master stones.
  • Grading of colour and fluorescence.
  • Clarity grading using the HRD Antwerp D-scope and loupe 10x with master stones for reference. 
  • Cut grading. Determination of proportions, symmetry and polish. Measuring dimensions using a caliper (micrometer).
  • Use of tables for proportions and symmetry.
  • Examination and grading of fancy cuts.
  • Characteristics and properties of diamonds versus imitations (simulants). Including simple tests to distinguish natural diamonds from imitations.
  • Identification of clarity treatments like crack filling.
  • Introduction to lab. grown diamonds and colour treatments.
  • Final examinations.

Examination

Practical examination CDG: Students have to examine and grade 8 diamonds correctly and identify a 9th stone as an imitation.
Theoretical examination CDG: Multiple choice exam with 40 questions.

Diamond Grading Practice Week

The Diamond Grading Practice Week introduces students to the procedures used to grade diamonds according to HRD Antwerp standards.

Using the 4Cs, students apply their knowledge by assigning colour, clarity and cut grades, and determining carat weight.

Students also learn how to identify and plot clarity characteristics and receive hands-on practice separating natural diamond from common simulants.

Classrooms contain a full workstation for each student, and more equipment like UV lamp, scale and HRD Antwerp master stones set.

Each student workstation has a binocular microscope and a lamp with daylight equivalent overhead light source.

Students receive the HRD Antwerp diamond grading kit, with tweezers,10X loupe, gem cloth, plotting pen set and pencil as part of the course materials.

Participants will earn the coveted 'HRD Antwerp - Certified Diamond Grader' Diploma if this course is combined with the Certified Diamond Grader Online Module.

Diploma: HRD Antwerp Certified Diamond Grader (or equal).

Proven and sufficient professional experience can be accepted too. In this case, a brief test with a loupe 10x will apply at the beginning of the course, testing knowledge of the properties of a diamond and its 4C’s, manipulation technique of loupe and tweezers (correct use), colour determination in theory and practice and evaluation of clarity and cut.

Course Content

Sorting parcels of round brilliants and fancy cut diamonds according to the 4C’s using loupe 10x, table loupe and sortoscope.
