Teacher: Mark Hanna

Mark has worked in the diamond industry for 38 years and has now set up his own company MAKE3EX. Previously he was Vice President of Laurelton Diamonds for 16 years and prior to this he worked for 22 years at De Beers (LDI). Mark started his career in Materials Science and moved to Electronics Engineering before he joined De Beers R & D in Belgium. Mark is originally from the UK and has lived in Belgium for more than 40 years.

At Laurelton Mark was the first employee and was head of a team that built a vertically integrated business for Tiffany, across 5 countries that now has more than 3,000 employees. At De Beers he moved from R & D into diamond manufacturing in the mid-80s after having completed engineering design projects for bruting and sawing machines. His diamond manufacturing experience is across a wide range of products from stars and melee up to 20ct rough in both white and coloured goods.

Mark has been involved in all aspects of diamond business design and development, rough procurement, rough planning, preparation, brilianteering, quality control and final grading. I recently retired from Laurelton and now does consultancy and training in the diamond business.
